![]() I should also say that it's a very smooth and and bugfree experience, with practically no loading screens. If you are interested in the lore and worldbuilding, be sure to check the Logbook on the menu. This 'less is more' approach really fits with the rest of the game. Idk what to tell you other than : it just works. Stuff like character backstories, they are subtle, they hint to a broader world but they leave the rest to your imagination. It's a simple premise which you play out and you unlock pieces of lore as you go. There is packed action constantly, making the quite moments so much more important. But it's not just about beating it, playing it is its own reward. When it starts there are no stakes, but as you see a build shape the stakes increase exponentially with the end being the peak of course. ![]() Though you probably won't get your eyes off it because it sinks you into its rythm and you become focused. It's very challenging, you can take your eyes off it for 1 second and be dead when you look again. Time plays a big role, as the timer counts, every X minutes difficulty increases until a point where it starts making leaps constantly. The stacking isn't always the same, there are 4 types of stacking depending on the item. Not only that but items scale infinitely and they scale with your abilites too. The easiest way to describe how the items work is : everything procs everything (as far as I can tell). It's very satisfying to see your build play out nicely. I always appreciate this marker-free approach to exploration and objectives. The game pushes you to explore, it gives you a general and often vague description of the objective but there are no markers and stuff like that here. ![]() The world is full of secrets and they are not easy to come by. I don't want to get more specific because I feel that describing the gameplay loop makes the game a disservice, so I won't go into the basic mechanics and how everything works. You start a run, you collect items as you go that shape your build and you move on, or you explore. Melee, Ranged, Mobility, Survivability are the main aspects that define them. You unlock others by completing specific challenges which can be very tricky sometimes, same goes for secondary skills for each one. There is the starting 'Survivor' who is kinda "default" and he is fine don't get me wrong, it's just to get you started. There are 11 classes ( excluding the expansion that came out recently ) and each one is so different in every way. Gameplay is on par with everything else, excellent. Personally I think it's a good idea to drop the SFX volume down to around 80-85% which I've done to get more of the music in tense moments, which are frequent. It's a banging soundtrack, definitely one of the best of the past few years both because of how good it is on its own and because of how it is used in the game. It can't be overstated how crucial the music is for this experience. It all creates a sense of urelenting flow and momentum and you just ride it. Time is very important to this world as well as the gameplay which I'll get into later. All you can do is start moving and keep moving hoping to find answers or just get out. ![]() You are thrown in a foreign, alien place you can't even begin to understand and you get glimpses of an outside world you can't ever hope to reach. Risk of Rain 2 thrives in its mystical ambience. I don't know if there is something with Roguelikes or Action Roguelikes or if it just happens that these 2 awesome games are of the same genre. The last time I was having this much fun must have been Hades a bit over a year ago. Also for Roguelikes and lites, I'll just be calling them all Roguelikes for the sake of simplicity.
